This was a game between two teams each of whom were having relatively indifferent starts to their seasons. Wyrley - with only one win from their first three games - were meeting Wednesbury who had yet to win a game.
Wyrley started brightly and their early possession led to a succession of corners followed by a goal on six minutes when some neat interplay in midfield culminated in a pass from Simon Casserley into the path of Thomas Evans. Thomas's strength and pace allowed him to maintain possession under pressure from two defenders and then place a neatly weighted pass into the path of the accompanying Jaffa Mayer who made no mistake from 10 yards.
This early lead aroused hopes of a relatively easy ride in the warm conditions, but Wednesbury proved themselves to be a hard-working and organised team who were not going to give up without a battle. On eighteen minutes a Wednesbury attack forced Adam Nicholls into a headed clearance close to the Wyrley goal with Nick Russell gathering the follow-up shot.
In the event, the period up to half-time saw Wyrley having the lion's share of possession but being limited to long-range shots on the Wednesbury goal from Luke Brown into the hands of the Wednesbury keeper, and then from Jordan Clarke over the bar. Wednesbury too were limited to shots from long-distance which were safely held by Nick Russell in the Wyrley goal.
Just before half-time, Matthew Anstey headed just wide from yet another Adam Nicholls' corner.
Half-time: Wednesbury 0 - Wyrley 1
Wyrley started the second half with the tactical introduction of Shaun Nicholls on the left with Jordan Clarke playing up-front with Jaffa Mayer, but were forced to make another change within five minutes of the restart when Luke Brown replaced Jason Dennerley in the centre of defence after Jason had been forced to retire with bruising to the ribs. Luke Moseley was introduced at left back as Jason's replacement.
The change in personnel seemed to unsettle Wyrley at the back and within five minutes Wednesbury were level. A ball through the Wyrley defence was poked past the advancing Nick Russell by Wednesbury's Greg James with Todd Wootton closing in.
In the ensuing period, Wyrley had to ride a bit of a storm as Wednesbury pressed for another goal, until Wyrley's one goal advantage was re-established by Shaun Nicholls who turned smartly on a loose ball following an Adam Nicholls' corner and fired the ball into the roof of the Wednesbury net via a deflection.
The remainder of the second half was a repeat performance of the first with plenty of Wyrley pressure but with no reward - however, the Wyrley defence of Luke Brown, Todd Wootton, Luke Moseley and Adam Nicholls backed up by a safe pair of hands in the shape of Nick Russell rarely looked troubled.
At the other end, Wyrley finished the game with a succession of attacks which saw first Thomas Evans put through by Edward Marrocco; followed by attempts on goal from Matthew Anstey, Luke Brown and Luke Moseley.
