Match Report

Wyrley went into this game determined to try and establish the rythmn to their game that had been lacking in their fixture against Park Hill the week before.

Riley Colts are a hard-working team against whom Wyrley had had no luck on the two previous occasions that the teams have met, and this fixture was no exception. However, in a game in which each side was limited to a handful of chances, Wyrley were unlucky not to come away with at least a point.

It seemed that it was going to be one of those days as early as the sixteenth minute when a looping Matthew Grendon header from a long Adam Nicholl's throw-in hit the Riley bar.

Riley too had a chance on the nineteenth minute when a player got free down the right-hand side and put the ball across the face of the Wyrley goal.

On the 25th minute, Riley got the breakthrough that was to prove decisive when Todd Wootton came out second best in a tussle for the ball about 25 yards from goal. Riley played the ball forward into the path of Michael Mayo who made no mistake with an accurate strike just inside Mark Biddulph's right hand side post.

At times during the first half the game was more akin to tennis as each ball ping-ponged between the two teams as each side played long balls in vain attempts to reach their front men.

Half-time: Wyrley 0 - Riley 1

Wyrley played with more fluency in the second half and kept a greater percentage of possession than in the first period, but chances on goal were at premium from both sides.

Wyrley showed good composure at the back with Jason Dennerley and Todd Wootton comfortably dealing with the Riley attack, the Adam Nicholls and Luke Brown keeping their wide men quiet. But as the game wore on and Riley became increasingly unadventurous, Wyrley were unable to convert their improving play into clear-cut chances on goal.

Thomas Evans and Edward Marrocco had opportunities to put Wyrley on level terms but Riley did well to block both chances. Then in the dying seconds of the game, Luke Moseley arrived right on cue to meet an Adam Nicholls' corner to the far post but somehow managed to put the ball the wrong side of the post.

This was a disjointed performance in a largely scrappy game. However, the afternoon was brightened by flashes of the sort of flowing football and team play that Wyrley are capable of when they are playing with confidence.

Full-time: Wyrley 0 - Riley 1
