If drawn games were decided by a panel of impartial judges based on possession, chances created and general gut-feel, then Wyrley would have walked away with all three points in this match. However, as we all know, it is the act of putting the ball into the goal situated at the far end of the playing area that wins games. Sadly, it was this one aspect that was lacking in a game which Wyrley could justifiably claim to have dominated in every department.
As in previous games, Wyrley were firmly in control for the opening period. As early as the first minute, Jaffa found himself through on goal with only the keeper to beat. Two minutes later, Jaffa was put through on the right by Luke Moseley but the cross went begging. Matthew Anstey then brought out a good save from a Simon Casserley free kick and Luke Brown headed over from the resulting corner - and all within the first four minutes.
Wyrley's back line of Adam Nicholls, Luke Brown, Todd Wootton and Jason Dennerley kept the Leamore front-line well in check. However, Leamore showed why they are second in the division with some swift counter-attacking football.
In fact, the golden chance of the opening exchanges fell to Leamore when the Wyrley defence fell asleep to allow a cross to an unmarked player at the far post - but Nick Russell in the Wyrley goal reacted well to deny Leamore an undeserved lead.
On 22 minutes, Luke Moseley slotted the ball into Jaffa's path. His shot was parried by the Leamore keeper and Matthew Anstey put the resulting chance just wide. Immediately afterwards, Jaffa blasted over from a Wyrley corner.
On 25 minutes, Jaffa found himself through on goal but was denied by the goalkeeper's arm outside the penalty area. The referee awarded Wyrley the free kick for the handball but ajudged that an obvious goal-scoring opportunity had not been denied by the offence and allowed the keeper to remain on the pitch.
Wyrley continued to dominate the proceedings right up to half-time and were denied with a header off the Leamore goal-line following yet another Wyrley corner.
Half-time: Leamore 0 - Wyrley 0
Matthew Anstey was withdrawn from proceedings for fifteen minutes following the restart due a muscle strain, with Luke Brown replacing him in the middle of park and Karl Deeley filling the breach on the right.
Leamore came out in the second half looking more like the team that Wyrley had expected to encounter but the teams largely cancelled each other out for most of the second period.
The home team seemed to gain some encouragement from their better showing and as time wore on the game became increasingly stretched as both sides went for the win.
The fresh legs of Shaun Nicholls, Matthew Grendon and Richard Bullock were introduced during the course of the second half in order to vary the approach.
Wyrley had plentiful chances in front of goal including several from crosses including a header from Matthew Anstey that skimmed the bar; another just over from a corner, headers from Jaffa and Luke Brown plus two goalmouth scrambles where Wyrley were just unable to find the decisive touch.
Wyrley finished the game as they had begun it - creating the better chances but being unable to capitalise.
The inability to turn chances into goals made this a frustrating outing for Wyrley. However the overall performance was a vast improvement on their league form so far this season and provides considerable optimism for the remainder of the campaign.
