This was the first meeting between these two teams since a pre-season encounter exactly seventeen months before on the 9th September 2001. Brownhills had played in the division above Wyrley throughout the 2001-2002 season but the reduction in the number of divisions at under 16s had put them once again in the same division.
It was Brownhills who started this game showing the greater appetite for the fray and within the first 7 minutes, both Todd Wootton and Luke Brown had been pressed into action with well-timed last stand tackles. But Wyrley were punished after 9 minutes for their inability to deal with a foray down Wyrley's right when Paul Proffitt put Brownhills ahead with a stroke low to Mark Biddulph's left.
Even after this early call to arms, Wyrley were unable to muster much in the way of a response.
Luke Brown had a chance close to goal from a Simon Casserley free kick following a foul on Shaun Nicholls, but at the other end, Mark Biddulph had to be alert to break up a Brownhills move inside his own area; and Jason Dennerley showed good anticipation to head clear from a Brownhills free kick.
As they had shown in their last league game when they had also gone behind to an early goal, Wyrley refused to panic but applied themselves to the task in hand and slowly but surely got themselves back into the game with a combination of short passing football and a greater desire to win the ball in the middle of the park.
Their reward came on 25 minutes when they strung together a textbook move involving 7 or 8 passes including a delightful backheel from Shaun Nicholls that culminated with Jaffa Mayer putting the ball low into the far corner of the net to put Wyrley on level terms.
The goal settled Wyrley and they began to show better composure in defence with Todd Wootton, Jason Dennerley, Luke Brown and Luke Moseley getting to grips with the Brownhills attack, but without the forwards being able to make their chances count at the other end.
Half-time: Wyrley 1 - Brownhills 1
Right from the start of the second half, Wyrley sought to rectify their patchy first-half performance with a string of chances.
On 43 minutes, Richard Bullock put a ball across the face of the Brownhills goal with Matthew Anstey just failing to make contact. This was followed by a well-struck shot from Simon Casserley.
Three minutes later, Shaun Nicholls launched a counter-attack from deep in his area with a pinpoint pass to the feet of Matthew Anstey who combined well with Jaffa to create space on the left to slide another ball across the face of the Brownhills goal with Jaffa sliding in at the far post but just failing to make contact.
Thomas Evans then put the ball over from 3 yards, before Jaffa put Wyrley ahead when he pounced on a loose ball after the Brownhills keeper had parried a stinging drive from Richard Bullock from distance.
The eagerness with which both teams attacked made for an absorbing second period with Brownhills working to re-establish a lead, and Wyrley seeking to extend it.
On 65 minutes, Brownhills broke away down their left and despatched a perfect ball into the box where it seemed that Brownhills must score but for the intervention of Jason Dennerley whose timely block diverted the ball out for a corner.
Wyrley continued to have chances of their own.
Jaffa headed over from a sweetly flighted free kick from the foot of Richard Bullock after Thomas Evans had been fouled.
Thomas Evans showed determination and strength when he held off the close attentions of two Brownhills defenders for twenty yards as he ran into the Brownhills penalty area but couldn't get his shot on target.
Then in quick succession, Jaffa firstly hit the post and then headed over from another free kick.
As the game wore on, and with their third goal failing to materialise, Wyrley became more pre-occupied with maintaining their lead than extending it, but still managed late attempts from the feet of Shaun Nicholls and Matthew Anstey.
The previous encounter between these two teams seventeen months previously had been an entertaining game decided by a single goal with Brownhills winning 4-3. On this occasion, the game was just as entertaining, except that it was Wyrley's turn to win by the odd goal.
