Match Report

Willenhall Town Juniors played as Beacon Star last season and finished sixth in the second division. This fact together with the results so far in the Round-Robin games meant that Wyrley were always going to struggle against a Willenhall Town Juniors team whose size dwarfed most of the Wyrley players. However, the difference between the two teams turned out to be not as great as their relative league positions suggested.

Wyrley defended well throughout the game and showed some invention in midfield in a largely unentertaining game. However, Wyrley failed to mount any significant threat to the Willenhall goal and had to rely on some brave goalkeeping from Mark Biddulph to keep the score respectable.

Shaun Dowen and Adam Chamberlain's impressive work-rate on the flanks combined with some battling performances by the full-backs, Adam Nicholls and Matthew Worsey, helped to subdue Willenhall's wingers on the wide pitch.

Willenhall scored their first goal after 19 minutes when they broke free down the left hand side after a pass had eluded Alex Hartshorn's interception. The subsequent cross was met at the far post by Willenhall's No. 8 who stooped to head the ball home.

Wyrley were finding it difficult to maintain possession in midfield and were making little impact up front. In response, Carl Gough was brought back into midfield to bring some speed to the flanks, with Shaun Dowen being pushed into an attacking role.

Willenhall added a second five minutes before half-time after a long throw which Wyrley were unable to clear, was headed over the advancing Mark Biddulph.

Half-time: Willenhall 2 - Wyrley 0

The game continued in the same vein in the second half with neither team showing much invention. Willenhall relied on their superior build and played a route one game. Wyrley attempted to play some football but too often gave possession away cheaply, tried overambitious long balls, or were caught in possession.

Willenhall were restricted to long range attempts on goal for long periods of the game. One of these hit the post seven minutes into the second half, but most of Willenhall's shooting was off-target.

Anthony Crump replaced Matthew Worsey for Wyrley at right-back after 45 minutes.

Willenhall went further ahead after 50 minutes with a Route One goal. A ball was played over the top of the Wyrley defence into the path of the Willenhall forward. Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal, who had previously stifled a couple of one-on-one goalmouth opportunities, was unable to prevent Willenhall taking a three goal lead.

On 60 minutes, Wyrley substituted Carl Gough for Jordan Clarke on the left.

Wyrley stuck ably to their task and tried to put some passing moves together, but without reward.

Willenhall scored their fourth and final goal 3 minutes before the end when Mark Biddulph - whose handling had been excellent all afternoon - let the ball slip from his grasp when catching from a corner.
