Wyrley faced a Willenhall Town Juniors side who lay second in Division 3 having been beaten only once in the league since their arrival from Division 2 at the beginning of the season. Both teams were without regular defensive players who were out with flu.
The players from both teams worked hard on a heavy pitch and staged an entertaining affair in marked contrast to the dreary encounter between the two teams in the pre-season round-robin.
Wyrley found themselves under a great deal of pressure for the early period of the game. In response to this, and after 9 minutes, Carl Gough swopped positions with Jordan Clarke to increase Wyrley's presence in midfield and in order to provide more pace up front. This switch immediately paid off when Carl Gough ran on to a through ball played out of defence. This put the goalkeeper and defender under pressure and led to the defender putting the ball into his own net.
Despite this good fortune, Wyrley continued to give Willenhall Town too much respect. The Wyrley defence in particular were unnerved by the pace of the Willenhall attack and too readily conceded territory. Similarly, Wyrley squandered possession when they obtained it further upfield. It wasn't long therefore before Willenhall turned their advantage into goals and went into the half-time interval 4-1 ahead.
Half-time: Wyrley 1 - Willenhall 4
Almost immediately from the restart, Wyrley conceded a soft early goal in which Adam Chamberlain directed a low cross into his own net. However, Wyrley were much more combative in the second half and showed that they could put together some good moves on a pitch which was anything but conducive to good football.
The improvement in their football brought its reward within 10 minutes of the restart when Wyrley pulled two goals back. Matthew Grendon headed a cross from Jordan Clarke past the stranded Willenhall keeper; and added a second when he latched onto a ball played into the penalty area; rounded the keeper and slotted home from an angle. This brought Matthew Grendon's tally to 14 goals in all competitions for the season and made the score a respectable 3-5.
Shaun Nicholls then replaced Carl Gough who had to retire with a recurrence of a knee injury.
Wyrley's exhibited a great deal more confidence throughout the second half . Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal showed improved handling and kept his nerve on several occasions when Willenhall forwards were put through on goal. The Wyrley midfield were better supported by the defence; were more combative, and linked up well with the attack to put together some good moves. Despite this, Wyrley were unable to reduce the deficit and went further behind after a header from a Willenhall corner was headed down to be prodded home to make the score 3-6.
Willenhall went further ahead with a shot from the edge of the box from a player who was given too long on the ball, then scored again to make the final score 3-8.
