This was a game against a local team comprised of players from one of the same local schools that several of the Wyrley players attend. It was therefore a contest that had been keenly awaited since the start of the season. Wyrley put in an extremely hard-working performance but were unable to impose themselves on the opposition. To their credit, Wyrley prevented Viper from imposing themselves either. Wyrley worked hard to gain possession of the ball when they got it, but were guilty of squandering possession too cheaply. The result was that the teams cancelled each other out and a draw seemed a fair result.
Wyrley experimented with a different formation for the first time - which saw Adam Chamberlain & Luke Moseley playing as wing-backs supporting the back three of Alex Hartshorn, Adam Nicholls & Matthew Worsey. Wyrley started brightly and seemed the likelier team to score during the first 15 minutes. Viper came increasingly into the game as the half wore on and Wyrley found themselves increasingly on the back foot. Nevertheless, Wyrley showed good organisation in defence and restricted Viper's efforts on goal to long-range shots and half-chances.
Half-time: Viper 0 - Wyrley 0
In the second half, Wyrley reverted to their 4-4-2 formation in an attempt to give themselves more penetration up-front. This change brought Wyrley more options going forward but they still found themselves let down too often by stray passes and players being caught in possession of the ball.
Todd Wootton came on for a flagging Adam Chamberlain after 45 minutes. Shaun Nicholls replaced Jordan Clarke ten minutes later.
Both teams continued to search for that elusive goal and play became increasingly stretched as legs and lungs grew more tired. Viper had several half-chances but were never able to match the pace of the Wyrley defence.
Wyrley had the most spectacular attempt of the game when Jason Dennerley attempted an overhead kick on goal; and Wyrley had the best chance of all when Carl Gough was put through on goal in the last few minutes. His shot was well-struck and on target, but was gathered well by the outstretched arms of the Viper keeper.
The Wyrley midfield did their fair share of defensive duties, and the attack pulled their weight in creating chances to get behind the Viper defence. Both teams continued to search for that elusive goal but there was little in the way of flowing football from either team. However, neither team threw caution to the wind and so it ended all-square with both the members of both teams looking exhausted as they left the field.
