This was an important game for both teams as each finished within a place of each other in Division 3 last season. Last season's games between the teams (when Victory Club were known as Ashmore Park Rangers) ended with a win apiece.
Wyrley absorbed some early pressure from Victory, but made their attacking intentions clear early in the game. Within 7 minutes, Wyrley had forced a header off the line by a Victory defender from an Adam Chamberlain shot who had been fed by a pass by Matthew Anstey. Two minutes later, Wyrley got their first goal when Matthew Grendon latched onto a pass in the opposition penalty area, shimmied around two defenders and struck the ball low to the keeper's left.
Wyrley continued to maintain the lion's share of the possession in the first half but were unable to convert their possession into attempts on goal.
A header from Matthew Anstey on 19 minutes brought an outstanding save from Stuart Jackson in the Victory Club goal.
Half-time: Wyrley 1 - Victory 0
Victory Club came out of the traps in the second half like a team possessed. They tore into a soporific Wyrley defence and had Wyrley reeling for the first five minutes of the second half. On 39 minutes, Jaime Goode scored from a quickly taken free kick 30 yards from goal while the Wyrley defence were at sixes and sevens. One minute later, Victory went ahead when Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal let a through-ball slip from his grasp and Victory's Craig Ash pounced to score.
Wyrley were stung into action and responded within 2 minutes with a goal from Adam Chamberlain who rounded two defenders to slot the ball home.
The score then stayed even with both teams creating and squandering chances until the 48th minute when Wyrley's Matthew Grendon was put through behind the Victory defence by a long ball from Adam Nicholls to score his second and Wyrley's third goal of the game.
During this period, Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal had made amends for his earlier slip-up when he stood up well to save from a Victory club striker who was put through on goal. Wyrley rode their luck as other Victory Club chances went begging including a header from an inch-perfect cross which was put wide when it seemed to be easier to score.
Wyrley wrapped the game up on 60 minutes when Matthew Anstey received the ball from a quickly taken Wyrley throw-in; ran through the Victory defence; played a one-two with Stuart Jackson in the Victory goal and scored from the rebound.
Shaun Nicholls was brought on for Greg Bloomer on 65 minutes. Edward Marrocco substituted for Jason Dennerley on 70 minutes. Edward moved to right-back with Luke Moseley moving into midfield.
There were no stoppages for injuries throughout the entire game. The lack of a physical element improved the game as a spectacle and reflected the passing style of play favoured by both teams.
