Wyrley were defeated in a cup game that they should have won due to a combination of some inaccurate finishing and indirect approach play.
There was an unfamiliar look to Wyrley's starting 11. This match against lower division opposition was used as an opportunity to give some new and some fringe squad members an extended outing. However, this served to provide Leamore with the opportunity to dump Wyrley out of the cup with a determined and dogged display of defending combined with some astute counter-attacking.
Wyrley had chances in the first half, with good opportunities early on from set pieces. An early free kick on 8 minutes from Adam Nicholls was headed on by Todd Wootton but Wyrley could not score from the ensuing goalmouth scramble.
Two minutes later, Leamore scored from a free-kick from a similar position. A ball floated over the Wyrley defence was latched onto and slotted home.
Todd Wootton used his pace to good effect to get behind the Leamore defence on several occasions but Wyrley were unable to capitalise.
Wyrley found it difficult to find scoring opportunities despite enjoying long periods of possession in the Leamore half of the field.
Half-time: Leamore 1 - Wyrley 0
Wyrley brought on substitutes in the second half in response to their continuing inability to breach the Leamore defence. Carl Gough's introduction provided some extra pace on the left-wing, which was followed by Adam Chamberlain's arrival on the right-side of midfield. Wyrley continued to dominate the possession although Leamore did look threatening on the break as Wyrley pressed for an equaliser.
Matthew Anstey brought a fresh pair of legs to midfield and Ashley Banks made his debut appearance alongside Alex Hartshorn at the centre of the defence. However, Wyrley were unable to find their rhythm or a way through a Leamore side determined to hold on to their lead.
Wyrley put together some good moves to put the tie into extra-time but were denied by some good defending and some inaccurate shooting.
Despite the result, there were some encouragement to take away from the game. This came from the newcomers Todd Wootton and Ashley Banks. Todd Wootton earned the opposition's nomination for man of the match with an energetic and pacy performance both in midfield and in defence; and in the 15 minutes that Ashley Banks was on the field, he showed good vision and excellent passing ability in making a 25-yard pass into the stride of Carl Gough from deep within his own half.
