After winning their two opening games of the season, Wyrley found themselves meeting Essington Wolves in a top-of-the table clash. However, the result was foreshadowed by the outcome of the pre-season friendly between these two sides which saw Essington Wolves win 7-0 at Jones Lane.
Essington announced their intentions after 3 minutes with a shot that cannoned off the Wyrley crossbar, and went ahead 3 minutes later when the Essington #14 scored from the edge of the box after Simon Casserley - playing his first game in the Wyrley goal - had parried a shot from Essington's Ben Wilkes.
In the first half, Wyrley tried to play a passing game of football with Essington preferring the more direct route to goal. Wyrley managed to curtail Essington's efforts via a combination of dogged hard work and good goalkeeping. However, Essington went further ahead after 17 minutes when the Essington #17 found himself in space on the right and lobbed the Wyrley keeper. Luke Moseley attempted a brave goalline clearance but only succeeded in heading the ball into the roof of his own net.
Wyrley managed to get the ball in the net themselves following a flowing move down the left involving Matthew Anstey & Carl Gough only for the scorer Adam Chamberlain to be ruled offside.
Half-time: Essington 2 - Wyrley 0
Wyrley's Carl Gough retired hurt a few minutes into the second half and was replaced by Shaun Nicholls.
Ben Wilkes tormented the Wyrley defence all afternoon with his pace and movement and was put through on goal again 12 minutes into the second half but was thwarted by an excellent block by Simon Casserley who then stood up well to see the rebound fired over the bar.
Wyrley should have had a goal on 50 minutes when a poor clearance from the Essington keeper landed at the feet of Matthew Grendon who sent the ball just wide of the open goal from the edge of the Essington penalty area.
In the second half, Essington started to show that they could play football as well and started to play the ball around on the ground. A penalty area skirmish on 55 minutes saw the ball fall to the Essington #7 who reacted quickest to score Essington's third goal.
Edward Marrocco was brought on as a substitute for Jordan Clarke on the hour mark. Wyrley continued to press for a goal and had a couple of half-chances from Shaun Nicholls: one from a free-kick which just cleared the bar and the other saw a goal-bound attempt deflected wide off the body of Edward Marrocco.
Essington wrapped up the game with two goals in the last 6 minutes - one from Ben Wilkes who scored after the Wyrley defence were unable to clear a long ball, the other scored via a lob from the Essington #11 who had come on as a substitute.
