After the euphoria of the previous week's emphatic victory against Bentley Community, Wyrley faced the daunting prospect of playing the team who were on the brink of becoming the divisional champions. Essington Wolves had not lost a game all season and had scored 101 goals in the process prior to the game against Wyrley.
Essington had arranged for the use of their Westcroft pitch and facilities for this Wyrley "home" game as Wyrley's home ground continued to be out of bounds.
Wyrley went into the game with three players missing from the team who had beaten Bentley and with a number of players nursing niggling injuries picked up over the course of a long season. Nevertheless, Wyrley went about their task in their usual up-beat spirit and frustrated Essington for the opening quarter of an hour with Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal pulling off a string of outstanding saves.
Essington's dominance eventually found a crack in Wyrley's armour on 17 minutes. There followed a ten minute period during which Essington rattled in a further three goals. However, Wyrley continued to defend staunchly and never gave up in a display which showed great heart and courage.
Wyrley picked up their first casualty of the game when Carl Gough retired hurt after 20 minutes to be replaced by Karl Deeley on the left wing.
Luke Moseley and Jason Dennerley worked tirelessly in the beseiged defence with Todd Wootton and Matt Worsey stemming the tide down the flanks. Simon Casserley and Matthew Anstey were in the thick of things in midfield with Adam Chamberlain and Carl Gough and Karl Deeley working hard to protect their full-backs and provide outlets to relieve the pressure. Matthew Grendon and Shaun Nicholls up front found themselves being pulled back into midfield more then they would have liked but they kept working to find space to create something from the meagre opportunities that were on offer. Nevertheless, the whole team dug in and defended stoutly for the remainder of the half.
Half-time: Wyrley 0 - Essington 6
Wyrley counted their wounded at half-time and were forced to switch the injured Simon Casserley from midfield into goal, with Mark Biddulph playing outfield for the first time this season at left-back in place of Todd Wootton who moved into midfield. Jason Dennerley continued to play a pivotal role in defence despite nursing a thigh strain until he too was forced to retire hurt fifteen minutes into the second half being replaced by Adam Chamberlain from midfield.
Carl Gough was re-admitted to the fray (courtesy of the referee and the opposition) and his pace provided Wyrley's beleaguered defence with a much needed outlet. Mark Biddulph had as good a game outfield as he had had in goal and the tiring defence continued to give 100% to contain a bouyant Essington.
Wyrley began to find more of the ball and forced a number of corners and free-kicks deep in opposition territory as the half wore on; however Wyrley were unable to capitalise on these chances to score and found themselves on the receiving end of their heaviest defeat of the season at the final whistle. The number of goals conceded however, does not tell the story of the heart and passion showed by the Wyrley players which outweighed any disappointment at the eventual margin of defeat.
