On paper this looked like a straightforward victory for Wyrley Juniors, but on the boggy and uneven Jones Lane pitch Wyrley struggled to put their usual passing game together and made hard work of beating a team who are bottom of their division.
In fact it was Caldmore Lions who scored first in the 5th minute when a cross from the left was met at the back post by Shuaib Rehman. However, Wyrley were back on level terms two minutes later when Shaun Nicholls scored from the penalty spot after Caldmore's Juned Ahmed had inexplicably plucked the ball out of the air with his hands in front of his own goal from an Adam Chamberlain cross.
Wyrley worked their way into the lead within 10 minutes from a well-worked move down the left involving Anthony Crump & Anthony Briggs which culminated in a goal from the ever-predatory Matthew Grendon.
Caldmore looked threatening on the break and were thwarted on a couple of occasions when they managed to get behind the Wyrley defence - once by a good save from Mark Biddulph diving to his right; and again by a timely interception from Anthony Crump who slid in to put the ball into touch.
Caldmore got their reward after 15 minutes when Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal elected to kick on the edge of his area. The ball was played back to the unmarked Shuaib Rehman who scored his second with Mark Biddulph stranded.
Both teams largely cancelled each other out for the remainder of the first half with opportunities missed at both ends of the pitch.
Half-time: Wyrley 2 - Caldmore 2
Wyrley announced their intentions within one minute of the restart when Adam Chamberlain rattled the Caldmore crossbar from long-distance.
The heavy pitch was starting to take its toll on the players' stamina. 10 minutes into the second half, Jason Dennerley was brought on to bring a fresh pair of legs to the midfield replacing Edward Marrocco. 5 minutes later Anthony Briggs was substituted by Carl Gough on the left wing.
Wyrley's efforts were finally rewarded 17 minutes into the second half when a poor clearance by the Caldmore goalkeeper following a backpass fell at the feet of Matthew Anstey who placed the ball clinically into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Having got their noses in front, Wyrley seemed to relax and started to play much better football. Within minutes, Jason Dennerley put Wyrley 4-2 ahead after Alex Hartshorn had lofted a free kick into the Caldmore penalty area.
Wyrley increased their domination as the game wore on. Matthew Grendon completed his hat-trick with two more goals bringing his league tally for the season to ten. For the first after 25 minutes, he received the ball from Adam Chamberlain on the right; rounded the advancing keeper and slid the ball over the line from an acute angle. Five minutes later, Matthew Anstey and Alex Hartshorn combined to send Carl Gough on a surging run down the left. His exquisite low cross was met by Matthew Grendon ghosting in at the far post.
Wyrley made hard work of this win with the poor pitch playing its part in undermining their energy and enthusiasm. However, Wyrley's goal tally could have been higher when Jordan Clarke fired a spot kick straight into the arms of the Caldmore keeper after Matthew Anstey was brought down after a strong run into the Caldmore penalty area. Caldmore looked fast and strong going forward but were seldom able to beat the pace or the tackling of Matthew Worsey, Alex Hartshorn, Todd Wootton & Anthony Crump in the Wyrley defence.
