After poor results against teams from the bottom of the table in the previous two fixtures, Wyrley hit a high spot with a hugely impressive result against Bentley Community who were lying second in the table at the start of the game.
This was a Wyrley home game played away due to the closure of Wyrley home venue.
It was difficult to believe that the same players who had struggled so ineffectively against Caldmore Lions and Park Hills Boys could put on such an awesome display of passing football. The disppointments of the previous games showed what happens when a team plays as 11 individuals. This game proved what can be achieved when those same players play as a team.
Wyrley were helped by a Bentley side who had obviously seriously underestimated their opposition and who reacted in the same way that Wyrley had done in similar circumstances the week before.
Two changes were made from the Wyrley side with Simon Casserley leaving his usual position between the posts and coming into the centre of midfield. Simon was ably replaced by Mark Biddulph who didn't put a foot wrong throughout the game. Jason Dennerley was drafted into the back four alongside Alex Hartshorn. Wyrley asserted their dominance from the start and maintained the initiative for most of the first half.
The game stuttered for the first 5-10 minutes with a spate of early injuries as each team attempted to gain the upper hand.
Wyrley's first goal on 15 minutes was the culmination of a flowing move down the left. Adam Nicholls and Matthew Anstey combined well following a throw-in. Matthew Anstey played the ball back to Adam Chamberlain whose cross from wide was flighted perfectly over the head of the Jordan Clarke's marker in the penalty area. Jordan met the cross with a delightfully cushioned header over the Bentley keeper.
Ten minutes later, Wyrley scored again on the break following a Bentley corner. Simon Casserley cleared from his own goal-line out to Adam Chamberlain who put Jordan through behind the Bentley defence. Jordan delayed his shot until it almost looked as though the chance had gone before poking the ball beyond the advancing keeper.
Half-time: Wyrley 2 - Bentley 0
Bentley came out of the blocks in the second half determined to get back into the game. However, the Bentley attack found the Wyrley defence in excellent form. Alex Hartshorn and Jason Dennerley were outstanding in the heart of the defence as were the full-backs Luke Moseley and Adam Nicholls. Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal denied Bentley two clear opportunities with some brave goalkeeping.
Despite Bentley's best intentions, Wyrley went further ahead on 45 minutes when Matthew Grendon scored with a powerful shot inside the Bentley penalty area following good link-up play.
Todd Wootton came on on the right-wing with Adam Chamberlain pushed up-front in place of Jordan Clarke. Todd's running with the ball helped Wyrley keep play in the Bentley half of the field.
Shaun Nicholls then replaced Simon Casserley in midfield and it was he who laid the ball back to Adam Nicholls and prompted him to have a shot from 30 yards from wide on the left. Adam's shot looked to all the world as though it was going wide of the right-hand post, and the curl caught everyone including the Bentley keeper by surprise when it nestled just inside the post for his first goal of the season.
On 65 minutes, Karl Deeley replaced Carl Gough who had worked extremely hard all afternoon creating chances up front and chasing back.
Adam Chamberlain rounded off the scoring after receiving the ball from Matthew Grendon in the Bentley penalty area and poked the ball just inside the post for his second league goal of the season.
This was Wyrley's best display of the season by a long chalk. This was an important game for Bentley who wanted to prevent Wyrley doing the double over them and secure their position in second place in the table. To score five goals from four different players and all from open play without conceding against a team of the calibre of Bentley Community surely demonstrates that Wyrley are underachieving in this division.
