Due to the pouring rain in which most of this game was played, the match notes had largely dissolved by the time the match had finished. As a result, this match report is written largely from memory. Please send any corrections to the manager at wyrley.juniors@btinternet.com.
After soaking up a spirited first 5 minutes from the home team, Wyrley started to play some attractive football which led to a succession of attempts on the Aldridge goal.
Anthony Briggs and Jordan Clarke in particular combined well down the left to produce a regular supply of crosses into the Aldridge penalty area. One such cross from the left led to Wyrley taking the lead after 20 minutes when a chip into the area by Jordan Clarke was headed on by Matthew Grendon beyond the grasp of the Aldridge keeper.
Aldridge played a fairly direct game which brought them their reward on 22 minutes when a long-range shot was mishandled in the wet conditions by Alex Hartshorn, the stand-in keeper in the Wyrley goal.
Wyrley found the wide even pitch much to their liking. They put together some sweeping moves which brought them within a whisker of extending their lead on more than one occasion - but for some poor finishing.
Half-time: Aldridge 1 - Wyrley 1
Wyrley started the second half in commanding style with Adam Chamberlain on the right flank making in-roads behind and through the Aldridge defence. Chances were being regularly created for the Wyrley forwards Jordan Clarke and Matthew Grendon. Within 5 minutes of the restart, Wyrley went ahead with a goal from Jordan Clarke scoring with a shot after collecting a pass from Adam Chamberlain on the right.
Aldridge showed a spirited response with some counter-attacking football which too often ended with long-range or poorly-directed shots which rarely troubled Alex Hartshorn in the Wyrley goal.
Wyrley wrapped up the win with a goal which finished the move of the game. The move started with a cross into the box from Adam Chamberlain on the right-hand side. Wyrley contested possession and played the ball out to the left, where Anthony Briggs and Jordan Clarke combined to dribble the ball back into the area where it was played across to Matthew Anstey. He trapped the ball, dummied the defender and then slotted the ball into the corner of the net.
